Kindergarteners are exploring weather in our current unit through stories, videos and experiments. They are making predictions, creating graphs, participating in a water cycle dance, completing art projects, and writing stories. Two weeks ago, students learned about evaporation. They saw that a regular balloon could be inflated when connected to the top of a vase immersed in a kettle with boiling water. Last week, students tried to pick up floating ice with a string. It was impossible until we added a special ingredient, salt. After many tries, we observed that the salt melted the ice and then the ice refroze over the string. It was exciting to finally pick up the cubes after many tries. The childrens’ patience was tested.
Our kinders are practicing the saying by Anthony J. D’Angelo, “Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.”
