When readers talk about a book they are reading, they will often tell you about the characters in their book. Characters in our stories are the ones that keep us engaged and keep us reading. We learn many life lessons from the characters in our books such as being empathetic and more sympathetic not only to the characters we meet in our stories, but also to the people in our lives. Our Third Graders have embarked on the journey of character studies and have immersed themselves in the books they are reading, getting to know their characters and learning valuable life lessons from them. During our character studies unit, our third graders have studied characters from their books and from a Podcast that we listen to together in class. Our readers have observed and constructed theories about their characters, made predictions based on the characters’ journeys across the story, and compared and contrasted characters across different books and other modes of literacy.
