After a long awaited few years, we finally were able to head to El Capitan Canyon in Santa Barbara with our current fourth graders this week. Our days included sunrise and sunset hikes, tide pool exploration, and California Native People inspired structure building on the beach. They participated in axe throwing and archery, medicine bag making and sea shell drilling arts and crafts. Around camp, the kids sampled edible plants while making face paint from the rocks around them. A main highlight of the trip was watching them step out of their comfort zone and test their climbing skills and agility on the high ropes course. Set thirty feet high up in the air students walked the logs and wires, trusting the instructions of the counselors below. They showed their teachers and chaperones how independent they were by unpacking themselves into cabins for their three-day stay, tucking each other in, and arriving early to all activities. Our students ate camp-style meals by the fire complete with s'mores for dessert! Our trip concluded with team skits and appreciation shout outs for each other. This morning, we walked to the llama farm to take in one last gorgeous Pacific Ocean view. It was a truly wonderful, unforgettable, bonding experience for this class with memories to last a lifetime. WOLFS UP!
