Math in the month of October is spooktacular! Second graders have been learning all about place value by exploring how the position of a digit in a number determines its value. We’ve been looking at thousands, hundreds, tens and ones while continuing to develop our number sense skills. In small groups, students have been exposed to a wide variety of activities allowing them to play with numbers. A hands-on math activity this month included digging deep into huge pumpkins! Each group collected all the seeds of the pumpkin and recorded the total number. There were more seeds than we expected! We sorted seeds into groups of hundreds, tens and ones. Last, we used our seed data to solidify our understanding of place value. Hands-on math has been engaging while helping us make better sense of numbers.
