Yawa! (pronounced yah-wah) That is how you would greet someone in the Chumash tribe’s native language. In small groups, third graders are beginning to research for their Native American tribe project. They will be learning all about their group’s tribe, such as the foods they eat, where in California they live, the types of shelter they had, traditions and any other facts that make them special. Once they have done all the research, they will be building a model of the kind of shelter they lived in before and the surrounding geographical features. By learning about other cultures, we hope to understand each other to help us make connections to ourselves and the world around us.
