Should we get a class pet? This has been a hot topic of our conversation amongst our second grade classes lately. Students have been working hard on convincing their teachers to get a class pet. Our writing unit this trimester focuses on persuasive writing. We’ve started by researching about each pet, really learning the ins and outs of what each pet needs. During Writer’s Workshop students are learning how to elaborate on their own opinions by providing reasons and supporting details to help make their argument meaningful. In small groups, students have been reading books and articles about different pets, taking time to formulate opinions with facts and concrete evidence. They’ve come up with some really great reasons so far so let’s see if these second graders can get their teachers to give it. Stay tuned!
