Science with Ms. Sands

In science, students have been battling the rainy, cloudy days of late and we are eager for spring to arrive. Students have been flexible as classes shift from outdoor to indoor, to back outside again. In kindergarten, students have been learning about California ecosystems and are taking good care of their classroom worm bin. Hopefully, warmer weather is around the corner so our earthworms can come out again and play! First graders have been learning about Earth's natural cycles and have begun outdoor observations that will continue into the spring. Students learned about scientific sketching as they made observations of changes in their classroom and they will be monitoring one of Crestview's trees through the end of the year. In second grade, students entered the world of animal adaptations and variation. They studied three California animals and how their adaptations impact their survival. Students will do some light learning on genetic variation to help illustrate how offspring inherit traits from their parents. Third graders have begun a cross-curricular unit with gardening and science on the topic of hydroponics. They will be testing the importance of plant nutrients and building simplified hydroponics models. The third graders continue to work on their migratory bird unit with Amigos Alados in between units and have received their second Zoom lesson and pen pal letters from the program. It continues to be a busy time for student learning and Spring Break is fast approaching. As warmer weather draws near, we can't wait to see what the spring season will bring!
