Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo! In writing class, our third graders have been studying fairy tale adaptations. We began the unit by reading the original Cinderella fairy tale. Then the students learned about how authors make adaptations to original stories by studying and reading several adapted Cinderella stories such as Prince Cinders, Seriously, Cinderella Is So Annoying ( The story of Cinderella told by the Wicked Stepmother) and Adelita. Through these stories, the third graders learned that they can adapt a story by changing the characters, events, character motivation, setting, the culture in which the story is told and by telling the story through different characters’ perspectives. Once the kids became experts in adapting stories, they wrote their own adapted fairy tales. It has been amazing to see their creativity and wonderful storytelling abilities shine through in their writing.
