Taylor Swift, Drake, “Hamilton: The Musical,” and “The Grimace Song” are just a few of the inspirations that helped fuel the latest sixth-grade grammar project. Students were all familiar with “The Helping Verbs Song,” a catchy little jingle set to the melody of “Jingle Bells.” Most of the lyrics are made up of the 23 helping verbs that students are expected to memorize. As we revisited this important grammar concept, students worked together to reimagine this old classic. The results were pretty impressive. How many of the 23 helping verbs can you name? True or false: Can the same word serve as a helping verb in one sentence and a main verb in another? Ask your sixth-grader to explain.
