Our sixth grade class recently immersed themselves in the study of thermal energy, undertaking the role of thermal scientists to assist the school principal of the fictional Riverdale School in choosing a new heating system. With two water-based heating systems on the table, students conducted experiments and utilized a thermal energy simulation to understand the molecular nature of temperature and its connection to kinetic energy. The recommended heating system must maximize efficiency in distributing warmth while minimizing energy consumption. Their choice was based on evidence that shows how this system effectively harnesses the principles of thermal energy. Sixth graders put together a persuasive presentation that emphasizes the long-term benefits of the chosen heating system – not only in terms of comfort for the school community but also in terms of energy savings and environmental impact.
