Last Friday, the Band Instrument “Petting Zoo” returned to Crestview in full force after a five-year hiatus. The day began with an exciting and informative assembly/rally for upper elementary students, led by our intrepid returning Advanced Band members who impressed and entertained the audience with two musical pieces. After morning recess, upper elementary students had the opportunity to participate in the Band “Petting Zoo,” where—with the guidance of three guest professional musicians and Band Director Mr. Nunez—students experienced a real “hands-on” sensory adventure with the four main band instruments; the flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone.
As one would hope, the Library was literally abuzz with extraordinary sounds and excited voices. Students were able to hold and try playing each instrument, with Mr. Nunez or his guest musicians close at hand to provide guidance. These hands-on instrument interactions left students inspired and excited about the prospect of making music in the band. According to Mr. Nunez, “This was all designed to inspire young people to imagine what fun it could be to learn how to work an acoustic band instrument, alongside their like-minded friends.”
