A smiling fifth-grader holds a cut-out paper mustache as a second-grader carefully applies glue to the center of it. "Now we need to stick the popsicle stick to it," says the second-grader looking up at her fifth-grade buddy, who nods warmly. These two students have just been paired up as buddies for the year, and they are participating in a very cute "ice-breaker" activity. After the paper mustache-on-a-stick is finished, the fifth grader holds it up to her nose, looks at her buddy, and says in a silly voice, "Now, I mustache you a question." This sparks a giggle from her partner, and the get-to-know-you conversation takes off.
Moments like this are what make Crestview’s Buddies Program so special. Our school prides itself on fostering a strong sense of community, and the relationships between older and younger students are nothing short of heartwarming. The Buddies Program is a shining example of this, in which students in third through fifth grade serve as mentors, friends, and reading companions to those in transitional kindergarten through second grade.
Together, buddies read, make crafts, celebrate class milestones and special events, work on service projects, and engage in other fun activities that deepen these relationships. As our older students guide the younger ones, they gain leadership skills while forming meaningful bonds. These experiences prepare them for the next stage when they take on even greater responsibilities. Sixth graders, having been buddies themselves, serve as school-wide role models, helping the new crop of mentors step up as the next wave of kindergarteners joins our community.
At Crestview, we believe that through programs like these, we’re building not only strong students but also future leaders.
