Have your kids ever wondered how seeds turn into the fruits and vegetables on their plates? Or why some plants grow better in the sun while others thrive in the shade? At Crestview, we’re answering these questions—and many more—as part of Crestview’s new Junior Master Gardener (JMG) program, now included in our Environmental Science curriculum.
Modeled after the highly regarded Master Gardener program, this initiative merges horticulture education with environmental science, while also fostering leadership and life skills through engaging, experiential learning. Observation, measurement, and problem-solving are seamlessly woven into the curriculum through both collaborative and individual learning experiences. Additionally, all JMG curriculum aligns with academic standards across science, math, language arts, and social studies.
Aligned with Crestview’s mission to foster responsible citizenship and environmental stewardship, the JMG program encourages students to actively contribute to their school, community, and family through gardening projects. By participating, students not only gain practical knowledge in plant science but also develop a deeper connection to the environment and the importance of sustainability.
Students who complete a series of fun, science-based activities and a community service project will have the opportunity to earn certification through the International Junior Master Gardener Program. This program is designed to inspire the next generation of environmentally conscious leaders, perfectly reflecting Crestview's core values of responsibility and community. So if your child comes home asking if worms make good pets or suggesting you start composting, don’t worry—it’s all part of the plan.
